Appointment
Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward was elected to a four-year term in 2016 and also served as state attorney from 2008 to 2012. In between, he was in private practice practicing criminal defense law. 

Early Life
Mr. Ward was born and raised in Miami and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970 to 1972, then was a police officer with the Miami Beach Police Department from 1972 to 2001. While serving there, he graduated from Barry University in 1986 and the St. Thomas University School of Law in 1989.

Work Experience
He was an assistant state attorney with the State Attorney’s Office from 2002 to 2004 and an assistant public defender with the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office from 2005 to 2008. He was an elected member of the Islamorada Village Council from 2014 to 2016.

Other Affiliations
Mr. Ward is commander of Upper Keys Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10211 and a member of American Legion Post 154 in Marathon, the Tavernier Elks Lodge and the Islamorada Moose Lodge, respectively.
