A Stock Island man was sentenced to three years behind bars and five years probation for selling drugs reported State Attorney Mark Kohl.

Judge Richard Payne handed down the strict punishment on Tuesday, February 8 after a jury found Luis L. Camejo, 52, guilty of the sale of crack cocaine last year.  Camejo had previously been convicted not only of selling cocaine but also of aggravated battery and carrying a concealed firearm in Miami-Dade County.

Kohl described the guilty verdict as a blow to the drug trade in the Keys.  “This conviction should send a message to anyone dealing cocaine in Monroe County,” said Kohl.  “Selling hard drugs means doing hard time.”

On September 17, 2004, looking into citizens’ complaints, two undercover Monroe County Sheriff’s officers approached Camejo on Stock Island.  One of the officers inquired about buying a “quick 40” – street jargon for two rocks of crack cocaine costing forty dollars.

Camejo told the officer to wait and rode his bicycle away to get the drugs.  He returned with half the order:  one rock of crack.  The same officer paid for that cocaine and dispatched Camejo to get the other rock while his partner looked on.  Camejo did as he was told and returned with a second rock.  The transaction was complete.

The two officers identified Camejo from photographs and a month later, on October 15, he was taken into custody.

Camejo’s sentence was more than double the legal minimum Judge Payne was required to hand down.  Assistant State Attorney Nat Cassel who prosecuted the case praised the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for its “meticulous police work” in helping secure Camejo’s conviction adding, “We believe this sentence will make a real dent in the Key West drug trade.”
