FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 27, 2006 Traffic Stop Lands Man in Jail for Multiple Offenses Investigators for the State Attorney’s Office do not often make traffic stops. But they did this morning and ended up arresting a man for a slew of vehicular offenses. Investigating Daniel Smith, 55, of Key West on suspicion of unrelated crimes, State Attorney investigators had only the description of Smith’s car to go on. In an effort to positively identify the suspect, Chief Investigator Paul Meyers staked out the Flagler Street residence to which Smith’s gray Dodge Ram was located. At about 7:00 this morning, a man took off in the truck. But the truck’s license plate, long invalid, had belonged to a green Jeep a woman had driven away from the house earlier that morning. State Attorney investigators and KWPD officers pulled Smith over on Southard Street. Not only was he charged with attaching a plate not assigned to the vehicle, but also unlawfully altering the plate by affixing a registration sticker belonging to the Jeep. Smith was further charged with operating a vehicle he knew was sporting erroneous identification. It also turned out that Smith had failed to appear for a D. U. I. hearing and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest so that his driver’s license had been suspended. Investigators say additional charges may be pending against Smith. |
