FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                      JUNE 19, 2006

Teen Released to Parents’ Custody

Christopher Ruiz will be reunited with his family today following a near three-week confinement in the Monroe County Juvenile Detention Center.

Ruiz, 13, is charged with felony vessel homicide in the death of six-year-old Charlie Smith on Memorial Day.  Ruiz has been in state custody in the Stock Island facility since his arrest on May 31.

The State Attorney’s Office agreed to release the Key Haven teen to his parents on the conditions that he neither operate a motor vessel nor leave home except for medical care or counseling.

Senior Palm Beach County Judge David Clark continued Ruiz’s arraignment until July 24 pending the completion of the State Attorney’s office investigation into the boating accident.
