FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 8, 2006 Indecent Exposer Gets Maximum Sentence A neighborhood menace notorious for urinating, defecating and masturbating in full public view will be far less exposed as of Wednesday. On June 7, County Judge Peary Fowler put Steven Morrison of Key West behind closed doors – county jail doors – for the maximum sentence of one year for the 1st-degree misdemeanor offense of exposure of sexual organs. Judge Fowler also ordered Morrison to complete a six-month J. I. P. (Jail In-house Program) for substance abuse rehabilitation and life skills. He is also required to attend anger management classes. At about 2:40 on a Sunday afternoon last month, the KWPD got a call about a man masturbating on a sidewalk near the intersection of Duval and Julia Streets. When Officer Janeth Del Cid arrived at the scene, she found Morrison, 47, reclining on a Julia Street sidewalk, flipping through a porn magazine with his left hand and masturbating with the other. According to police reports, Morrison told Officer Del Cid “that he could play with himself as much as he wanted to because [she] had no proof he was in fact doing so.” Actually, Officer Del Cid was taking photographs of the overexposed Morrison which were admitted into evidence at yesterday’s hearing. In what seemed to be a prescient dare to Judge Fowler, Morrison also reportedly said “he has been arrested for the same offense before and that no judge can keep him in jail for such a thing.” Neighbors say that the episode was not the first instance of Morrison’s obscene behavior. Douglas Heyman, manager of the Duval Gardens Bed & Breakfast wrote in a police statement that Morrison had been seen “numerous times on or next to B&B property urinating, defecating and masturbating . . . This man is a constant nuisance up and down Duval Street.” In fact, Morrison has been charged with at least 20 misdemeanor crimes over the last six years including indecent exposure, shoplifting, disorderly intoxication, trespassing and resisting arrest. “Morrison repeatedly demonstrated his disregard for people’s sense of safety and well being,” said Assistant State Attorney Eric Wicks who prosecuted the case. “We are pleased that Judge Fowler took him off our streets for as long as she could.” |
