FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                   MAY 31, 2006

LaTorre Charged with Drunken Driving

The office of the State Attorney and the Florida Highway Patrol requested and received a warrant for the arrest of Louis LaTorre yesterday for allegedly driving drunk and colliding with another car on U. S. 1 in the early morning hours of April 15.

LaTorre, 59, is charged with driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and a second count of DUI causing property damage.

County Judge Peary Fowler signed the warrant with a bond of $50,000 yesterday afternoon in Key West.

LaTorre surrendered himself to the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office Detention Center on Stock Island early this morning.  He was immediately released having posted $50,000 in bond money.

According to FHP reports, LaTorre was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of U. S. 1 at about 2:44 AM on April 15.  His vehicle reportedly collided head-on with that of Nadezda Bowman, 33, of Big Coppitt Key who was driving north.  The crash occurred just south of the Boca Chica overpass.

Driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury is a 3rd-degree felony which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.  DUI causing damage to property is a 1st-degree misdemeanor punishable by a maximum penalty of a year in jail and fines of $1,000.
