FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 21, 2006 Investigators Seek Input on Sunshine Case In their first public acknowledgement that they are conducting a probe into alleged violations of the Sunshine Law by members of the Monroe County commission, investigators for State Attorney Mark Kohl are seeking evidence from any eyewitnesses to the possible crime. “In every investigation we conduct, we try to explore every potential resource for evidence,” said Chief Investigator Paul Meyers. “We want to encourage anyone who has factual, verifiable evidence about a crime here to come forward.” In a February 15 meeting of the county commission, County Attorney Richard Collins was summarily fired by way of a 3-to-2 vote which had been added to the agenda the day of the meeting. The unexpectedness of the action led some to speculate that the Sunshine Law had been breached. The State Attorney’s office generally does not comment on ongoing probes to safeguard civil rights and to protect the integrity of its investigations. “We are at a point in our investigation where we want to see any evidence from witnesses to a possible violation of the Sunshine Law in this case,” said Meyers. “We hope anyone who has first-hand information will contact our office.” Meyers stressed that while many people have suspicions about the case, only those with factual knowledge about an alleged crime should come forward. “We’ve heard lots of rumors about this case,” said Meyers, “but we can’t prosecute on rumors, only on facts.” |
