FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 26, 2005 Sucker Punch Sends Man to Jail for 3 Years An unprovoked punch at the Green Parrot last March yesterday landed a Keys man behind bars for three years on a charge of felony battery. Acting Circuit Judge Wayne Miller sentenced Miguel Guevara, 32, to the long sentence after a Key West jury found Guevara guilty of assaulting Alejandro Rodriguez, 38, in the Southard Street bar. Felony battery, which is usually reserved for cases involving incapacitating or disfiguring injury, was invoked in Guevera’s attack because he had been convicted of prior assaults. Rodriguez and witnesses say a rowdy and belligerent Guevara entered the Green Parrot on the night of March 18 last year and approached Rodriguez who was with a friend. Guevara claimed that the victim owed him money and, without warning, hooked a sucker punch to the left side of Rodriguez’s head. An acquaintance of Guevera’s then “escorted the suspect from the bar and away from the scene,” according to police reports. Police also say that Guevera admitted to being in the bar but denied having been in a fight. Rodriguez has suffered from a hearing loss in the left ear since the attack. Prosecutor J. T. Gorman said Guevara’s emotions flared in the courtroom as they had in the bar room: at one point in the court proceedings Guevera threatened a prosecutor from Mark Kohl’s office and he also wept openly when the guilty verdict was read. |
